Condition overview
What is urinary tract infection?
A urinary tract infection happens when germs infect part of the urinary system. It may affect the bladder, kidney, prostate, or urine passage.
Many UTIs improve with the right antibiotic. Recurrent UTI, fever, kidney pain, and infection in men need careful evaluation.
Symptoms
Common symptoms include burning urine, frequent urination, urgency, lower abdominal pain, cloudy urine, bad smell, blood in urine, fever, chills, side pain, or weakness.
A kidney infection may cause fever, chills, vomiting, and side or back pain.
When to consult a urologist
Consult a urologist if UTI keeps coming back, fever is present, pain is severe, urine has blood, or symptoms do not improve.
Men with UTI symptoms should be evaluated because infection may be linked to prostate, stones, blockage, or incomplete emptying.
Diagnosis and tests
Tests may include urine routine, urine culture, blood tests, ultrasound, post-void residual urine check, CT scan, cystoscopy, or prostate evaluation when needed.
The aim is to confirm infection, choose the right antibiotic, and find why infections keep returning.

Treatment options
Treatment options for UTI
Simple UTI may need a short medicine course. Recurrent UTI needs a deeper look.
Options may include culture-based antibiotics, pain relief, hydration advice, prevention steps, and treatment of stones, prostate blockage, stricture, or incomplete emptying.
Recurrent UTI planning
Care is planned around urine culture, infection pattern, scan findings, bladder emptying, and recurrence triggers.

"Repeated UTI should not be treated blindly again and again."

Before, during, and after UTI care
UTI care should treat the infection and look for causes when infection repeats.
- Bring urine culture reports
- List all antibiotics taken
- Share fever, chills, or side pain
- Bring scan reports if available
- Avoid self-starting antibiotics
- Drink fluids unless restricted
Your plan will depend on symptoms, culture report, recurrence pattern, and scan findings.
